“There is an innate impulse to survive, and people survive because they must—not because it's easier for them.”

— this line & that whole paragraph is so well put. I’ve always grimaced at the false statement “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. I think you identified why. We prize resilience without recognizing that there are more ways than absolute suffering, pain, neglect, & abuse that create resilience and maybe what comes from those things isn’t resilience at all but a system that views its entire world as a threat that must either be fought against or avoided. Being in survival mode chronically is not the same as being resilient. In fact it’s our ability to move into and out of survival mode in appropriate intervals that makes a resilient human.

I also find it laughable that the academic world would approach such a topic as burnout without acknowledging that the very structure of the academic institutions is built to do just that; Completely obliterate a persons wellbeing for the sake of their studies. No human is built to be well through their academic process.

Just absolutely loving reading your essays Adriana ♥️ keep ‘em coming! Or not on account of nothing is worth burning out over 😉🫂
